Manchester United won their third European Cup in Moscow in 2008. After remaining deadlocked at 1-1 with Chelsea at the end of extra time, John Terry and Nicolas Anelka missed penalties in the shootout to hand the trophy to United.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson considered the 2008 team one of the best he ever put together, rivaling his double winners in 1994 and the treble winners in 1999. By the time Ferguson retired in 2013, a lot of the team had already been broken up.
Wayne Rooney's departure to Everton this summer leaves new club captain Michael Carrick as the squad's sole survivor from that night in Russia. Here is a look at what happened to the rest.
Edwin van der Sar
The Dutchman saved the crucial penalty from Anelka in the Moscow rain to win the trophy for United. He played in Champions League final defeats to Barcelona in both 2009 and 2011 before retiring. He is currently chief executive at Ajax, his first club.
Wes Brown
With Gary Neville injured, Wes Brown was United's regular right-back during the 2007-08 season. It was his cross in the final that set up Cristiano Ronaldo to head in the opening goal.
After leaving United in 2011, Brown played for Sunderland and Blackburn. He is currently training at Conference side Macclesfield.
Patrice Evra
After the final, Evra stayed at United for another six seasons before leaving for Juventus in 2014. After losing finals with United in 2009 and 2011, he lost another playing for Juventus -- again against Barcelona -- in 2015. Now 36, he's playing for Marseille.
Nemanja Vidic
The Serbian became club captain for the 2010-11 season before leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2014. He spent two years in Italy with Inter Milan before retiring in 2016. He still lives in Milan and does ambassadorial work for United.
Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand was captain for the night in Moscow and lifted the trophy alongside Ryan Giggs, who came on as a substitute and scored in the shootout. After leaving in 2014, Ferdinand played one more year at QPR before hanging up his boots. He works as a pundit on BT Sport.
Owen Hargreaves
The Champions League final against Chelsea was the climax of Owen Hargreaves' first season at Old Trafford after moving from Bayern Munich the previous summer. He made 34 appearances in his debut campaign. Yet after playing in Moscow, he only played another five games for the club because of injury. He signed for Manchester City on a free transfer in 2011, but only made four appearances for the club. He retired in 2012 and works alongside Ferdinand at BT Sport.
Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick is the one survivor from United's starting XI in Moscow. He celebrated 11 years at Old Trafford with a testimonial in June, just a few weeks after signing a one-year deal which will keep him at the club until at least next summer. He has recently been made club captain, succeeding Rooney after the forward returned to Everton.
Paul Scholes Paul Scholes scored the goal against Barcelona in the semifinal second-leg at Old Trafford that got United into the final. He retired after the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona at Wembley in 2011, but came back midway through the next season. He helped United win their 20th and most recent league title in 2013 before retiring again, this time for good. Like Ferdinand and Hargreaves, he is working for BT Sport.
Wayne Rooney
After 13 years, more than 550 games and 253 goals, Wayne Rooney returned to his boyhood club Everton this summer. He broke Sir Bobby Charlton's United goalscoring record in January and won the Europa League in his final game, completing his collection of domestic and European trophies during his time at Old Trafford.
Carlos Tevez
After helping United win the Premier League title and the Champions League in his first season at United, he left under a cloud in 2009. He signed for Manchester City, where he won another title in 2012. The Argentine went on to play for Juventus and Boca Juniors, and is now at Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the final but missed his penalty in the shootout. Amid rumours of a move to Real Madrid, he declared he would stay at United for another season following the game in Moscow. He did, but moved to the Bernabeu for a world record £80 million in 2009. Now 32, he's still at Real Madrid and won his fourth Champions League title last season.
